GTR are recruiting a Insights Lead based out of Monument Place
This is a great opportunity for an individual with a proven track record to work for one of the country's busiest and award-winning rail companies.
Job Purpose
As Insight Lead, you will lead the development and application of advanced analytics, machine learning and AI-driven insight across GTR, ensuring data is used ethically, effectively and in line with robust governance. You will partner closely with senior stakeholders to translate operational, safety and commercial priorities into impactful analytical models and interventions.
You will provide strategic oversight of insight development on top of the DataHub platform, ensuring consistent standards for model development, validation, deployment and benefits realisation, while acting as a key interface between the central Data & AI function and the wider business.
This role requires deep professional expertise in analytics and machine learning, combined with sufficient organisational understanding to apply these techniques effectively within GTR's operational and safety critical context.
Anticipated interview dates:
First stage: w/c 06 July 2026 (Teams)
Second stage: TBC (in person, Monument Place)
Key Accountabilities:
- Provide strategic leadership for advanced analytics, machine learning and AI use-cases across GTR, ensuring alignment to the Data & AI strategy.
- Accountable for the quality, robustness and limitations of insight produced, and for clearly communicating these to decision‑makers; ownership of strategic direction for Data & AI remains with the Head of Data & AI.
- Operate effectively in ambiguous problem spaces where analytical approaches, data availability or outcomes are not fully defined, exercising judgement in developing appropriate modelling and insight techniques.
-
- Lead the design and delivery of predictive and prescriptive models, including (but not limited to) fraud detection, incident reduction, service exam optimisation and intervention prioritisation.
- Establish and maintain governance frameworks for models, including model lifecycle management, validation, documentation, monitoring and ethical use of AI.
- Partner with Directorates and data owners to identify high‑value insight opportunities and translate these into clear, deliverable analytical products.
- Oversee the effective use of Copilot Studio and Fabric agents where appropriate to augment insight delivery and decision-making.
- Ensure insight outputs are measurable, outcome-driven and linked to tangible operational or financial benefit.
- Provide direction and oversight to Data Scientists, ensuring consistent standards, tooling and ways of working.
- Act as a senior escalation point for insight-related risks, assumptions and modelling limitations.
Context
The role sits within the central Data & AI function, working on top of GTR's DataHub platform, which ingests and curates data from core operational systems. While data engineering is centralised, insight and analysis must be delivered in close partnership with the business, particularly in safety critical and operational environments.
Knowledge:
- Strong understanding of advanced analytics, machine learning and applied AI in operational environments.
- Knowledge of data governance, model governance and responsible AI principles.
- Understanding of rail or safety critical industries is desirable.
Skills:
- Strong ability to translate complex analytical techniques into clear business insight and decision support.
- Excellent stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to influence at senior levels.
- Strategic thinking combined with hands-on analytical capability.
- Comfortable operating in ambiguous, evolving problem spaces.
Experience:
- Experience delivering data engineering solutions in an enterprise or large-scale environment.
- Experience supporting reporting and analytics platforms (e.g. Power BI).
- Experience working within formal delivery, governance and change management processes.
- Degree in Data Science, Computer Science, Statistics, Mathematics or related discipline or equivalent experience.

Testimonials
What our staff say
“I work as part of the Fleet Infrastructure team, which means ensuring our 18 Engineering locations operate safely and efficiently. We oversee all building and track maintenance works as well as various minor and major projects across the network.”
Hannah Richards
Fleet Infrastructure Administrator
“I started in a small ticket office back in 1996 and have continued to work my way up ever since. A previous manager told me about a job he’d seen advertised for a trainer. ’d never considered a job in HR or mentoring before then, but he said I’d be perfect for it and I haven’t looked back since!”
Zoey Hudson
Head of Talent, Diversity and Inclusion
“Since April, I’ve helped to support our Kickstart Scheme. It’s been a really rewarding process to be part of because I know first-hand how tough it can be to find work once you’re out of it.”
Jack Gow
Mobile Station Manager
“I love the freedom that comes with being a train driver. Obviously, there are rules and regulations to follow as well as duties and commitments to carry out, but in a way, you’re sort of your own boss, which is nice.”
Ashley John
Train Driver
“I’m a Thameslink passenger host and team leader based at Luton station and I’m currently doing a Level 3 Supervisor apprenticeship so that I can improve my skills even further. I was hesitant to do the apprenticeship at first because of my age – I left school over 60 years ago without any qualifications! It’s been hard to get back into the routine of learning again.”
Bob Bryce
Passenger Host Team Leader
“It was my brother’s suggestion to join the railway. He was already working in the industry and knew I had some university bills to pay off so told me to give it a go, get out of debt and see what I wanted to do next. After a while, it just felt like actually – this is exactly where I’m meant to be. I’m part of a great team and the on-board department as a whole are brilliant to work with. I feel at home here.”
Tonderai Matizha-Johnson
Area Operations Manager
“When I saw that GTR was advertising places for its apprenticeship scheme I looked into it straight away because I thought it was a great opportunity to learn whilst getting real life experience in a 9-5 job. I applied for a level three business administration apprenticeship and was thrilled to find out I had a place on the course! I was so excited that I didn’t even mind it was based 250 miles away from where I lived.”
Harriet Dee
Team Administrator
“Working for GTR is very rewarding and fulfilling. You really feel like you're making a difference to customers, no matter what role you're in as at the end of the day they're the heart of our business. I’ve had lots of opportunities to explore other aspects of the business including supporting our station staff and gaining my Train Dispatch Licence which has been enriching for my experience here.”
Maggie Luckhurst
Platform / Train Dispatch
“If you’ve always had an interest in rail, or maybe you’re just curious to find out what working in the railway might look like, GTR is the operator to go for. Not many companies do an official work experience program and this unique opportunity will give you a good grounding with varied activities to help you find the best place in the railway for you. It certainly did it for me.”
Nathaniel Owen
Station Manager
